ALMONDS
- ORIGIN
- Almonds come from the fruit of the almond tree, which is related to peach and plum trees and probably native to the Mediterranean. Today almonds are widely cultivated in the Mediterranean, California, South Africa and Australia, Chile and Argentina.
- NUTRITION
- There are two types of almond: bitter and sweet. Sweet almonds are the ones that we can eat raw or skinned and cook with. They have a nutty flavour and are high in fibre and protein and packed with vitamin E, B vitamins, magnesium and calcium. Cholesterol free, research shows that a handful of almonds a day may help lower negative levels of cholesterol. They’re a handy snack. Marzipan is made from crushed almonds, water and sugar.
