
PEANUTS
- ORIGIN
- Also known as groundnuts or monkey nuts, the peanut is really a legume (a plant of the pea or bean family), like the pea, after which it is named. The ‘nut’ is the dried seed of the plant.
- A native of South America, the peanut is now cultivated in many different hot regions, including the southern states of North America, West Africa, India, China, Malaysia and Indonesia.
- NUTRITION
- Rich in niacin (deficiency of niacin can be caused by excessive alcohol intake), peanuts are also a good source of protein, iron, magnesium and zinc and only moderately high in fat in comparison to most other varieties of nuts.
