PINE NUTS
- ORIGIN
- There are over 100 species of pine trees recognised world wide. Of these, about 12 produce nuts which are sufficiently tasty to make them worth harvesting.
- The nuts are actually the seeds of the pinus pinea, the Mediterranean stone pine, and sometimes also known as pine kernels or pine seeds.
- They shelter between the leaves and pine cones as they grow and are harvested not only for their delicious taste and nutritional value, but also for their oil.
- They are commonly grown in the Mediterranean, North Africa and some states of the USA.
- NUTRITION
- These tasty nuts with a creamy texture are high in protein, calcium and magnesium. As with other nuts, pine nuts are 10–25% protein, high in mono and polyunsaturated fats.
- Added to leafy salads, rice dishes, cooked spinach or other vegetables or used to make pesto, they are delicious.
