Raisins in a dish

RAISINS

  • ORIGIN
    • During the 11th century knights brought raisins back from the crusades to Europe. However, it is thought that raisins were probably ‘discovered’ by ancient man the first time they were found dried on the vine.
    • The USA is now a major raisin producer. Grapes for drying are harvested in late August by hand picking. They’re laid out in rows and left to dry naturally in the sun. It takes two to three weeks for a fresh grape to become a sun dried raisin and an amazing four pounds of fresh grapes make approximately one pound of raisins.
  • NUTRITION
    • In nutritional terms, raisins are not only a good source of fibre, potassium, iron, calcium, selenium and certain B vitamins, but also fat and cholesterol free! Their high carbohydrate content means they are a good energy food.
  • DIETARY INFORMATION
    • dairy free
    • gluten free
    • high fibre
    • vegetarian and vegan
