
SESAME SEEDS
- ORIGIN
- The seeds of an annual herb, ‘sesame indicum’ grows well in hot climates. Known to have been grown since the dawn of civilisation it is the most commonly produced seed. The Egyptians and the Chinese used sesame seeds medicinally. The seeds are largely cultivated in India and the Eastern world now.
- NUTRITION
- Sesame seeds are a good source of protein and calcium as well as containing iron and niacin. Crushed, they are used to make tahini which can be eaten as a paste, added to cooking or used as a dressing for salad when mixed with flax oil.
- Now commonly found in cereal bars, you can also add them to smoothies, include them in soups, stews or stir fries and in cereals and breads.
